ABOUT ANURADHAPURA

An Empire’sSacred Ruins.

Anuradhapura served as Sri Lanka’s political and religious capital for well over a thousand years, and its ruins span an enormous area of dagobas, monasteries and reservoirs built with remarkable engineering skill for their time. At its centre stands the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree and among the oldest documented trees in the world.

The scale of the site rewards a full day — massive stupas like Jetavanaramaya and Ruwanwelisaya rise unexpectedly out of the surrounding parkland, still active as places of worship rather than sealed-off ruins.
