Everything YouNeed to Know.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. Apply online in advance and keep a printed or digital copy for immigration.
Currency & Money
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but carry cash for markets, small eateries and tuk-tuks.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination. The west and south coasts are ideal from November to April, while the east coast is best between May and September.
Getting Around
Private drivers and vehicles are the most comfortable way to cover long distances. Scenic trains are worth the extra time in the hill country.
What to Pack
Light breathable clothing, a light rain jacket, modest wear for temples, comfortable walking shoes and reef-safe sunscreen.
Local Customs & Etiquette
Dress modestly and remove shoes and hats when visiting temples. A polite smile and a few words of Sinhala or Tamil go a long way.
Health & Safety
Tap water isn’t recommended for drinking; bottled or filtered water is widely available. Basic travel insurance covering medical care is strongly advised.
Food & Dining
Don’t miss rice and curry, hoppers, kottu roti and fresh seafood on the coast. Most dishes can be made mild on request if you’re sensitive to spice.
