Trincomalee’s natural harbour has drawn traders, colonial navies and pilgrims for over two thousand years, and its clifftop Koneswaram Temple — perched above the sea at Swami Rock — remains one of the most striking Hindu shrines in the country.
Just offshore, Pigeon Island’s coral reefs are among the most accessible in Sri Lanka for snorkelling, while the wide beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli give the east coast a quieter, less developed feel than the south.
